Most slip-and-fall injuries I evaluate are not caused by rare or unusual conditions. They’re caused by common, repeatable retail floor hazards that should have been addressed long before an incident occurred.

Some of the most frequent hazards I see include:

  • Wet or greasy floors with no warning signage
  • Entrance areas with inadequate mat coverage
  • Mats that curl, bunch, or slide
  • Uneven flooring transitions
  • Worn tile, loose grout, or damaged flooring
  • Water tracked deep into the store during bad weather

As a Retail Expert Witness, I assess whether the retailer anticipated these risks and followed reasonable industry standards. That includes reviewing cleaning protocols, inspection intervals, and whether employees were trained to recognize and respond to hazards.

Flooring-related cases often come down to predictability. Weather happens. Spills happen. High foot traffic happens. Retailers are expected to plan for these conditions—not react after someone is injured.

My evaluations frequently include virtual or on-site inspections, review of maintenance logs, and analysis of store design. This approach allows attorneys to better understand whether the hazard was temporary, recurring, or ignored.
